TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENT ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH TO MODERNISE BUSINESS - THIS IS WHY

It is easily acceptable that modernisation is necessary for continued business existence and success, however the methods and things involved in modernisation of business are debatable.

The most telling example of modernisation and keeping with the times in business is technological advancement in the form of information communication technologies(ICTs) and artificial Intelligence (AI). Great strides have been made on this front, use of these tools has resulted in unprecedented efficiencies in doing and running business operations.

However the above mentioned examples are only a part of the business set up, the non-human element which must be blended with the human aspect to complete the set up.

Technological advancement alone is therefore not enough to modernise business, there has to be a shift in paradigms from the old which were exceptional at their adoption but have become ineffective vis-a-vis the advancement in ICT and  globalisation.

In a world where some businesses operate in more than one continent or region it is inevitable that no matter how consistent the leadership wants the organisational policy to be throughout, it will be forced to change here and there due to the cultural dictates and legal obligations of the respective jurisdictions under which they would have chosen to operate.

Furthermore, most hiring and remuneration practices of old are inconsistent with the kind of human capital available nowadays, the gender imbalance agenda is in overdrive and
people want to be remunerated equally for doing equal work without putting one gender above the other.

Whilst many women have risen to powerful and influential positions in recent times there still seems to be an imbalance of sorts even in the support structures around them compared to their male counterparts. They often  find themselves fighting lone battles in the boardrooms and having to put extra effort to advance their ideas for buy-in and adoption.
This is a sign of past ideologies refusing to budge in some circles when the world is getting progressive in terms of tolerance and accommodation of previously disadvantaged and marginalised groups.

Cultures have become intertwined, as much as racism and all other negative isms continue to rear their ugly heads people have crossed the divides, communities are more cosmopolitan than ever. This means that previously held norms and acceptable methods no longer suffice for the diversified societies of modern times.

Working arrangements and hours are taking a shift from the usual 9 to 5 in the office especially for white collar professional and specialist workers who are getting more inclined to flex-time and working from home.
Factory work has also evolved, previously manually operated machines are now automatic where they have not been replaced by robots altogether. The result of this development is redundancy of general  to semi-skilled operators as far as the system is concerned yet they still constitute the employable workforce subject to
re-skilling and re-assignment of duties. This then speaks to a need for  re-designing the human capital development policies of businesses to ensure continual improvement of the employees' skill-set to realise full potential.

Traditional business set up systems made no room for such arrangements, with this new age ideology gathering momentum it creates a disconnect between the old and the new ways of doing things, hence the need for paradigm shifts in leadership mentalities and ushering in of new and adaptive strategies to match the technological and socio-economic developments of modern times.

We therefore see the need for wholesome development in all aspects of business without leaning heavily on just technological advancement whilst maintaining the status quo on other equally important ones.

Modernisation certainly goes beyond the gadgets and the robots, it requires our will to realise and accept obsolescence of past strategies in order to adopt new progressive and cutting edge ones.
