WHY WE SHOULD FILL UP OUR SPACES - IT'S PRODUCTIVE AND PROFITABLE CITIZENSHIP

WHY WE SHOULD FILL UP OUR SPACES - IT'S PRODUCTIVE AND PROFITABLE CITIZENSHIP

Mother earth is a finite space of existence for the human race and all
the flora and fauna around us. So all seven billion of us share this finite space with the plants and animals of the world which means there is a certain system of spatial allocation for those that inhabit the earth.

A small tree coming through the ground from its germinating seed occupies a negligible amount of space, however as it grows getting the right nutrition, sunlight and water it grows and grows beyond this negligible space to be the giant baobab of the beautiful African bush-veld or the famous Biblical mustard tree which Jesus Christ describes in the gospel of Luke as follows;
Mark 4:31-32 KJV
[31] It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds that be in the earth: [32] But when it is sown, it groweth up, and becometh greater than all herbs, and shooteth out great branches; so that the fowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it.
So in light of the above analogy we learn that spatial allocation and occupation increases proportionally with our growth regardless of how small or negligible we start.

Fortunately we the human race are blessed with the gift of self determination, the sense of right and wrong which overally is our ability to make our own choices. The onus is therefore upon us to make the most of our spatial allocation by filling up the space allocated to us fully and utilising it productively with the creative talent inherent in us and acquired skill from determined learning and practise.

It is those individuals in life who upon realising their talent or working to acquire a skill exert themselves honing to it perfection who get ahead. These individuals are like the once negligible seeds occupying negligible space in their time of birth yet fully grown and mature they become iconic towering giants in their respective spaces.  This is true for all men and women of all races whether they are born great, have greatness thrust upon them or they achieve greatness as William Shakespeare put it.

 All of us therefore have a duty to fill up our space by being as productive as we can utilising our talents and skills for our own good and the good of all the world. He/she who fills up his allocated space inevitably grows in stature and status because they cannot be ignored.

Filling up one's space is an open secret to getting ahead wherever we are be it at work or school as well as all other social and economic bodies to which we affiliate as people. That promotion which we so yearn for in our jobs year in and year out or less frequently sometimes can come if and only if (under normal circumstances without manipulation of systems that is) we fill up our current space such that the appointing authority sees us outgrow the current scope allocated to us by delivering exceptional and timeous results. Inevitably we are allocated a bigger space, bigger responsibilities and indeed bigger rewards for it.

In other instances filling up our spaces results in indirect rewards unlike the work promotion scenario above, by doing what we do diligently and passionately we go beyond the call of duty, ask more questions and learn more things, as a result we get exposure and experience which a lazy person will never gain no matter how long they stick on their job and comfort zone. When this happens our eyes are opened to new opportunities and niches which we can explore individually and develop into our own enterprises - voila! enter ther entrepreneur! This is filling up our space.

At times we make the mistake of holding the organisations and businesses we work for to ransom without realising it by trying to maintain our relevance and make ourselves felt by holding back on tasks and dragging our feet so that people know how much they need us or how important we are to the organisation. Anyone who has worked in his/her life or visited offices manned by civil servants in any country can testify how painful it is to watch them turn their backs at you whilst queueing to be served by them claiming break time ten minutes before actual break time or being told to leave your documents and come a week later just for a stamp and signature on the documents. Whilst there are some exceptional civil servants who deliver good quality service at their work stations we have all experienced their holding to ransom inefficiency. Such civil servants are not filling up their space!

The same goes for those of us who park documents for days on end on our desks purporting to be working  some important magic tricks which only we can do on them. We want people or even the big boss to call and walk to our office and ask "so and so, how far with that report?" Then we ramble on about why it takes long and that we are being as good as it gets. This kind of behaviour is criminal and definitely not filling up our space as responsible employees and citizens. Such work can only results in one way; shrinkage and a way out with our little box of personal belongings shamed and disgraced.

The parable of the nobleman who gave talents to his servants when he went on a mission comes to mind, those that put their allocation of  talents to good use got good rewards for their work - thus filling up their space! Whilst the one who buried his one talent got stripped of it and it was given to the one who had been most profitable! Really now? - Yes really! So Jesus says wrapping it up;

Matthew 25:29-30 KJV
[29] For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. [30] And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. …😳😳

Dear brothers and sisters this is not a typical sermon but an indictment to laziness wherever we find ourselves disrespecting the  roles and occupations entrusted to us be they jobs or our own entrepreneurial work. We ought to fill up our spaces and do the best with that which our hands findeth to do. By our works we are judged and by them too shall we be known and remembered.

We may be tiny mustards seeds today living and working in obscurity being negligible and ignored, however by our decision of commitment to filling up our space and growing with every breath we take one day is one day we will be negligible no more and our results will speak for us and themselves.

Are you filling your space today? Am I filling up mine? Food for thought.
