WHAT SERVICE PACKAGE DO YOU GIVE YOUR EMPLOYER IN WORK QUALITY? - EXCELLENCE ON DEMAND OR EXCELLENCE UNLIMITED PREMIUM?

WHAT SERVICE PACKAGE DO YOU GIVE YOUR EMPLOYER IN WORK QUALITY? - EXCELLENCE ON DEMAND OR EXCELLENCE UNLIMITED PREMIUM?

We live in an era of packages by service providers, some access is only available on demand whilst some is unlimited depending on what the consumer or customer opts for. Some packages come with bundles of freebies as sweeteners to outdo the competition. Good examples are telecommunications, satellite television and internet service providers.

We can take the above example to use as analogy in assessing our own performance as hired parties to employment contracts. It is easily forgettable in the minds of many of us as employees that the employer is a client of ours and consumer of our services which we sign for on the employment contract.

So just as we expect to enjoy excellent service as value for our money from service providers, it is only befitting for our employer to expect excellent service from us as individual employees or collectively depending on the nature and structure of our contracts.

However more often than not as employees we tend to develop a sense of hostility and skewed attitude towards our work especially when the organisation employing us has challenges of meeting our remuneration obligations as they fall due for one reason or another.

Even in organisations that pay us well we can still be found taking everything for granted including the perks which we feel so entitled to. We want it because "we deserve it" the organisation owes it to us and when we want it we must get it without fail.

Now amidst all the assertion of highlighting and demanding our rightful dues we need to recall the point made above that "THE EMPLOYER IS A CLIENT AND CONSUMER OF OUR SERVICES" as such deserves excellent service from us just as we expect excellent service
provision ourselves.

Continuing with the service package analogy, we then assess our individual and collective performance  in the workplace and categorise by package. Are we the kind of employees who only display excellent work under scrutiny or when the boss is looking and slacken or skive as soon as they turn away? Do we want to be pushed and followed upon
time and again to produce the work which we signed up for out of our own will? This is the "excellence on demand" package.
We only give it when its demanded by the boss otherwise it goes to hibernate mode until the boss shows up again. If we are full time employees in our organisations this package we run so often short-changes the client significantly yet more often than not we fail to realise this mismatch of service rendered and package paid for.

The reason for this mismatch is our pre-occupation and in the worst case obsession with getting served by the employer forgetting that we are the ones in service.

Moving on, we look at the rightly matched scenario of service rendered  and package paid for by the consumer who in this case happens to be our employer. We take our work seriously and execute with professional efficiency and interest.
Tasks are carried out to the finest detail of procedure, where there is need for deviation we report promptly and give the justification for the sake of accountability and transparency. Now this is the excellence  unlimited premium package delivered to the employer.

Here we exhibit pride of performance and display our skill and talent at its best. We understand fully that our work is a direct reflection of us and speaks for us even when we say nothing  out verbally.

Premium packages come with all
the bells and whistles, sweeteners in the form of freebies or extras are thrown in to the consumer's delight. These extras distinguish or in marketing terminology differentiate one offering from the competitor's offering.
Such is the case if we are employees, the way we discharge our duties differentiates us from the next person even among same hierarchical level. We may have similar job titles and descriptions yet deliver different packages to the employer.

It is really a matter of choice on the employees' part to consciously decide which package to deliver as the employer naturally expects nothing but the best as outlined in the respective contract.

Going the extra mile and giving that extra percentage in our work shows the premium delivered and it presents consumer utility for the employer. The employer realises value for money and appreciates one's contribution even if they don't say it  explicitly or acknowledge it  openly. Yes, there are employers who take even their best employees for granted but it's a discussion for another day.

Delivering premium has personal benefits of inner fulfillment and not only developing but perfecting one's skill set. Going the extra mile widens one's scope and business outlook because one ventures beyond the normal call of duty and learns new things which one would not ordinarily learn because they are not obliged to venture into yet wise all the same to explore.

We can asses our work performance by introspection even without formal appraisals to ensure we own our growth and development.
The appraisals would be confirmation  of our personal analysis on our performance.

A lot can be achieved for no more than the optimal cost within organisations simply by doing our jobs efficiently with conscious interest and desire for positive results. Service excellence is an indispensable part of career growth  and business development.

In contrast, a lot is also lost usually untraceable by its nature due to the excellence on demand package where people work under constant supervision and do nothing more than what their contract stipulates even if it's an opportunity to grow and personally benefit the individual.

Laziness comes in many forms and one form usually seen in the work place is skiving and lingering for hours on end in irrelevant social media sites.

We must put this into perspective because there is relevant use of social media, in fact heavy use of social media for business promotion, research and development in this era where business and social life seem to blend more each day. So it is important to exercise restraint and responsibility to that end.

At this point we should ask ourselves and give our unequivocal answers to the question - What service package do you deliver to your employer in work quality?
