They can't read!

They Can't Read!

In 2016 Five hundred million, half of a billion! Huge number by any standard be it money or any other numerable unit. Just what am I talking about? Women and girls in the world who in this day and age cannot read! Really??
Such is the reality of our society, on this occassion of International Women's day I'm drawn to this horrendous statistic which exposes the situation obtaining right in the middle of a fast evolving digital hi-tech hi-perfomance  and hi - everything world. Humanity has really made huge strides in advancement and unbelievable new cutting edge stuff is churned out everyday. Have we really achieved? looking at this scary figure of people, women, mothers daughters, and sisters who can neither read nor write?
If the statistics can be drawn it means these women and girls are amongst us right in our midst. No excuses fellow people Globalisation has taken new technologies to the remotest parts of the planet by one core dimension; willpower! Willpower drives men and women to harness and gather "scarce" resources and channel them to envisaged viable causes.

Five hundred million is a loud cry of appeal to men and women of goodwill everwhere to contribute each one in his/her way to the enlightenment of the illiterate masses, they have full faculties as human beings, they  can speak fluently their mother tongues yet they couldn't even tell if they saw their mother tongue in written form..imagine that!
It's exclusion in its worst case, segregation, an injustice!
They are living in darkness in broad daylight because words displayed right in their face have no meaning to them, even an opportunity advertised on a billboard requiring the very talents they possess goes wanting for lack of the ability to read,  just plain  reading  no degrees, diplomas and certificates but just the ability to make sense of words in any language.

People of goodwill look with love and consideration upon these ladies and disadvantaged members of society. Deadlines are being set and summits being convened for gender parity by such and such a year and date at different forums, how laudible and noble these ideas and efforts by any standards yet in the light of such statistics one asks where will these excluded and pre disqualified women be when the deadlines are reached?

Let us Help them help themselves!
Changing a woman's life you change a community's life! Teach her to read and her children will read and be read to! Women are the  "s's" in the masses they literally carry the world on their backs, let's lighten the burden by lighting their torch of literacy.
